Chrysler PT Cruiser: a successful example of retro design. Serviceman's dream: Chrysler PT Cruiser repair and maintenance

Which the manufacturer created with a retro design and this is the Chrysler PT Cruiser - a car that has become very popular among the female.

The car was presented to the public at the Detroit Auto Show in 1999, and in 2000, mass production of this model was launched. Initially, it was only in the hatchback body, and after 5 years a convertible was released, which looked good. In 2009, the manufacturer decided that it was necessary to discontinue this model, it was sold in some countries until 2010 and after that it was completely discontinued.

The design of the Chrysler PT Cruiser is the most controversial part of this car, it is very much an amateur. The muzzle is distinguished by a high hood relative to the arches, which are very swollen and it is on them that the headlights of the head optics are located. The radiator grill is unfortunately not chrome-plated, but it is not small. There is just a huge molding on the bumper, and already under it there is an air intake and deeply inserted fog lights.

When viewed in profile, you don’t notice anything but huge swollen arches, but the stamping on the door with chrome molding is still striking. The rear has small headlights, a smooth but almost flat trunk lid and a small bulging bumper.

Specifications Chrysler PT Cruiser

The line of power units includes only two types of motors whose characteristics are similar, although there were more of them before. These are gasoline engines, the weakest of them is a 1.6-liter 16-valve engine that produces 116 horsepower. The second engine also has 16 valves and 4 cylinders, while its volume is 2.4 liters and it produces 143 horsepower. There was also a diesel internal combustion engine, but it was not supplied to our country. These units worked in tandem with a 4-speed, or it could be installed on a 5-speed car.

The motors had relatively low fuel consumption, but by modern standards, the consumption is, of course, high, the weaker engine consumed 10 liters in the urban cycle, and the second engine 13 liters of fuel per hundred kilometers.

Interior

The interior of the model is also created in a retro style and therefore not everyone likes it. The driver will drive the car holding on to a 4-spoke steering wheel, behind which is a dashboard recessed into the dashboard. The center console is also unlikely to be able to surprise with anything, it has a stove selector, an air conditioner and a radio tape recorder, in principle, there is nothing else there.

Near the Chrysler PT Cruiser gear selector there are two cup holders next to which there is a cigarette lighter socket. Rear passengers will not get so much space, but, nevertheless, they will not feel direct discomfort. The car does not have a small trunk, its volume is more than 500 liters, while it is possible to significantly increase this space by folding the rear seats.

In fact, this is a good car that girls liked at one time and now you can buy it for yourself or for a girl and drive safely, since there are no serious negative reviews about it.

Video

Among the auto giants of the "big three", Chrysler has always stood out for its "non-standard" design and design solutions. Once again, he proved this at the 1999 Detroit Auto Show - where a unique car was shown - the PT Cruiser.

Realizing the difficulty of classifying this car, stylized as a "fastback sedan of the forties of the last century", the company came up with the abbreviation "PT" for it - "personal transport".

With its appearance, the Chrysler PT Cruiser immediately makes it clear that it is “not for dull clerks” - its exterior is so extravagant. The front end with protruding wings of the “little truck”, the sloping roof and the chopped off feed are all emphatically reminiscent of “pre-war automotive trends”.

At the same time, it is important to note that the extraordinary appearance of the Chrysler PT Cruiser was so “liked” by everyone that in 2005, when “it was time for updates”, the designers were afraid to make drastic changes - limiting themselves to a light facelift.

So, by 2006, the updated "PT Cruiser" received a new "branded-Chrysler" grille with horizontal slots and a winged emblem, chrome trim (wheels, moldings, gas tank hatch), modified rear optics and a spoiler (significantly improved aerodynamic performance).

By the way, it should be noted that such a unique design significantly limits visibility - a “close traffic light” cannot be seen through a low windshield, and the driver has to “guess” about the dimensions of a long hood and low protruding wings. Looking around in the interior rear-view mirror is also “useless” - the headrests completely cover the small glass of the rear door. And in the version of the Chrysler PT Cruiser Cabrio, the folded soft roof still does not fold into the trunk, but simply lies on the surface.

An attempt to improve visibility, perhaps, justifies the high, but not very comfortable, landing. In addition, both the front and rear seats are quite hard. In addition, only “traditionally hard and cheap” plastic finishes can also be attributed to the disadvantages ... otherwise, the interior of the Chrysler PT Cruiser is an example of “taste”, “own style” and, oddly enough, functionality.

The retro feel is evident in every detail of the Chrysler PT Cruiser's interior - the four-spoke steering wheel, gear lever (with a round chrome knob) and the analog clock with the "Chrysler" emblem. Only now, due to the design of the steering wheel, it can be problematic to use the paddle shifters. Round dashboard wells with “archaic” dials, at the same time they have quite “futuristic” backlighting… and in the “top-end” configuration (including full power accessories, cruise control and Hi-Fi audio system) we easily return to modern reality. The only thing that seems “controversial” here is the placement of the power window buttons on the center console.

The rear row of seats not only has a folding backrest, but the whole can be folded (and attached to the front seats) - thus, the already not small, luggage compartment volume of 620 liters grows to 1800 liters.

At the same time, additional niches and drawers are hidden in the flat floor and side walls, as well as a “12V” socket (of which there are three in the car - one more is located next to the central cup holders, and the last one replaced the “cigarette lighter” (by the way, in “health care” , ashtrays are also not provided here)).

Speaking about the technical characteristics of the Chrysler PT Cruiser, it should be noted that this front-wheel drive car was equipped with a wide range of four-cylinder power units - five petrol and two diesel options (only petrol options were offered for the convertible, with the exception of the “junior”):

  • The “youngest” is a 1.6-liter “aspirated” gasoline engine with a capacity of 115 hp. (at 5600 rpm) and 157 Nm (at 4550 rpm)
  • Next comes a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated petrol with a capacity of 141 hp. (at 6000 rpm) and 188 Nm (at 4350 rpm)
  • The atmospheric 2.4-liter unit is capable of delivering 143 hp. (at 5250 rpm) and 229 Nm (at 4000 rpm)
  • Turbocharged 2.4-liter engines, depending on the degree of “forcing”, are capable of:
    • 182 HP (at 5200 rpm) and 285 Nm (at 2800 rpm)
    • 223 HP (at 5100 rpm) and 332 Nm (at 3950 rpm)
  • Diesel 2.1-liter turbocharged:
    • "eight valve" - 121 hp (at 4200 rpm) and 300 Nm (at 1600 rpm)
    • "sixteen valve" - 150 hp (at 4000 rpm) and 300 Nm (at 1600 rpm)

Each of these engines can be paired with a 5-speed "mechanics", and only 2.0 and 2.4-liter gasoline engines are equipped with a 4-speed "automatic".

The dynamics of gasoline versions ranges from 13.5 ~ 7.0 seconds “up to a hundred”, the maximum speed is 176 ~ 193 km / h, and the average consumption is 8 ~ 11 liters per 100 kilometers. Diesel "first hundred" gain in 10 ~ 12 seconds, accelerate to a maximum of 183 km / h, consuming an average of 7 liters of fuel.

The first 1.6-liter 116-horsepower is paired with a five-speed manual transmission and accelerates to hundreds in 13.5 seconds. The second engine is 2.4 liters, having 143 hp. certainly faster, but 10.3 seconds to a hundred for a one and a half ton car is not an indicator. Although there are no complaints about the operation of the four-speed “automatic”.

I would like to note, according to the results of a “small test drive”, that: “automatic” of course “does not impress” with dynamics, but there are no objective complaints about its work; but the sound insulation here is rather weak - at high speeds, “the sound of a roaring engine fills the cabin”; the “typical American” suspension is soft and, as a result, rolled; the brakes are commendable - very grippy.

Prices for the Chrysler PT Cruiser in 2016 (for the "secondary" market in Russia) fluctuate in the range of 200-600 thousand rubles (the cost of a particular instance, of course, largely depends on: condition, year of manufacture and level of equipment).

Good day.

I could not stand it, thoughts swarming in my head, so I decided to write a review about my Chrysler PT Cruiser. I’ll make a reservation right away that I only used it for 3 months and drove 3000 miles on it.

So, everything is in order.

I have owned a Mitsubishi Lancer IX model for 3.5 years now, carelessly, always and in any weather I ride for my own pleasure. No indeed! The soul requires something extraordinary, and the head does not give rest to the hands. Somehow poking around on the Internet in ads for the sale of cars, I found an interesting ad for a 2002 PT Cruiser 2.4 automatic with a motor knocking after overheating. The price seemed to me to be quite reasonable. Went to see for fun … bargain and bought this car. I thought that I would get by with little bloodshed, repair it (fortunately, hands grow from my shoulders) and sell it. Drove home, and the house has already begun to see what can be done. And then I ran into the problem that the good skills of a car mechanic in this car cannot be applied without a special tool and a lift or pit. The fact is that the engine compartment of the PT Cruiser is designed EXTREMELY TIGHT and just climbing somewhere ... is simply unrealistic. It was an unexpected blow to my wallet, i.e. any operation had to be carried out at a specialized service station with the appropriate prices.

Nothing to do, went to the service station. There they passed a disappointing verdict: due to overheating of the motor, 2 and 3 pistons were seized and pulled up (they didn’t breed, I personally checked everything, felt it), therefore, replacing the piston and boring the block. Work with spare parts came out about 120,000 rubles. It was 2 times cheaper to find a normal motor at a showdown and replace it, which I did, since the Americans do not have an engine number. I must admit that I came across a very successful motor, I did not even expect such power and agility. Along the way, changed seals, antifreeze, filters, oil. I began to drive and then a new problem - the radiator fan stopped turning on. Again went to the service station. There they pronounced a verdict on the fan motor. Replacing the motor - gentlemen, just don't fall - 25,000 rubles !!! I couldn't go for it! Came home, nothing to lose, climbed to disassemble. Dismantled, almost half of the car to get to it. I took it off, disassembled the motor itself, it turned out to be the brushes, called the shops - the brush assembly is only to order, wait 4-8 weeks, the price is 6000 rubles. Or a motor for 17,000. In short, I took off the brushes, went to the shops, picked them up, the starter copper-graphite ones from the Oka came up with a little modification for 50 rubles. I cleaned everything, lubed it, assembled it, installed it - it works perfectly.

Frost hit here. The worn rubber bands on the running gear cringed. I started tapping. Prices for all elastic bands + work = about 20,000 rubles. Too expensive! They say: “What do you want? It's a PT Cruiser!" I would have changed it myself, but there is no pit, no lift! And then there's the Pioneers tore off the Chrysler badge from the hood and picked up the antenna along the way. The price of the issue is 2000 badge and 1000 for the antenna. So where do these prices come from? This is the PT Cruiser.

In short, I'm tired of these prices. Yes, and investments have already begun to go beyond the bounds of decency, it was easier and cheaper to buy a normal car. Well, I didn’t know that everything is so expensive for this device and it’s impossible to do anything yourself! The bulbs in the headlights burned out, and all at once, with an interval of 1 day. The rear ones can be replaced without problems, but with the headlights a whole hemorrhoids. It is necessary to turn the wheel, open the dirty dirty fender liner hatch, bend the arm in 4 places, remove the old lamp, pull it out, then pervert again and get to the headlight with a new lamp without dropping it. Well, I don’t want to be taken out in the mud. Damn, I do not wish the enemy. It's easier to give 1000 re for the replacement of lamps.

Separately about operation. Drove 3000 miles. Kruzachok rides quite nicely, the motor pulls perfectly, there is a very powerful pickup and a jerk at medium speeds, and this car just flies away from its place. Lancer after the Cruiser somehow sluggish rides, although I used to think that he was also quite peppy. The automatic switch is barely noticeable, soft-soft. Handling after Lancer is not so hot, but you can ride. The turning radius is still too large, nothing can be done, such a design. I put a huge fat minus for excessive appetite, well, 17-20 liters, although the 92nd, but this is too much! And that's normal for this car. Especially in winter. I talked on the forums with other owners, everyone is like that. Lancer, compared to the Cruiser, just smells gasoline.

The patency in the snow is excellent, until it sits on its belly it will make its way to its own like a tank, not even particularly skidding, although the rubber is on it with the usual all-season, even closer to summer. This is probably due to the very heavy front end.

The car always started! In any frost, I experienced at -27. The stove is a separate issue! After 5 minutes, warm air begins to blow, after another 5 minutes, it simply breathes fire. At an outside temperature of -25 in the car, an hour later, at the first position of the stove switch, it is very hot. I had to lower the temperature. And I really liked how the car is kept warm. The salon does not cool down for a long time, after the PT Cruiser in Lancer it becomes cold just instantly. Maybe it's because of the large area of Lancer's glazing or something else, I don't know. But it is VERY warm in Kruzachka.

Salon. It transforms perfectly as you like, the fit is very comfortable, there is a lot of space, it seems that the car is larger inside than outside, the finishing materials are up to par. Nothing anywhere creaks, does not squeak, everything closes clearly, a very pleasant salon. Unusual control of power windows, especially for rear passengers, the buttons are located illogically on the rear tunnel.

Noise isolation. It seemed to me that in Lancer it is better, somehow quieter, especially with a quiet ride. Maybe this is the calculation of the designers, after all, the car was made under retro.

I sold my Chrysler, he left some mixed conflicting feelings. On the one hand, a really good worthy car with an interesting design, high-quality finishes and materials, attracting attention (although traffic police officers too) and people's smiles, with good handling, a powerful engine, etc. etc. On the other hand, huge fuel consumption, too expensive spare parts, exorbitant appetite of service stations (they know that on their own even such a simple operation as replacing candles, where you need to remove the intake manifold, 99% of the owners will not do it themselves, but will come to them ). For example, replacing a timing belt costs them (only work!) 18,000 rubles and takes 1-2 days, as it goes.

In short, the operation of such an apparatus as the Chrysler PT Cruiser, oh, what a not cheap occupation! Somehow he kept me in constant tension, a trifling malfunction drags along a bunch of banknotes. But the ride itself on this American was quite pleasant. And for the last month he did not demand anything, except for a tank of gasoline.

I sold it, sat down on my Lance again, it inspires me with some kind of confident calmness, which was not the case with Kruzachk. Whatever happens to Lancer (so far, nothing, pah pah pah), I’ll fix most of the problems myself, all pieces of iron are 2 times cheaper, gasoline eats moderately, though there is no such exclusive, or something. Everything is normal and everything is at hand.

Well, I croaked. And Lance asked for investments. The battery in the remote is dead. We must buy. I hope I can change myself.

The Chrysler PT Cruiser design has many detractors and just as many supporters. But one thing is for sure - no one can pass by this car indifferently without throwing some remark in the trail. The PT Cruiser was first introduced in 2000, and two years after the premiere, a 2.2-liter turbodiesel appeared on the list of offers. The production of the car was established in Mexican Toluca, and since 2001 - in Austrian Graz (for Europe).

In 2004, an open-top version was shown - a convertible. Two years later, in 2006, the car underwent a slight restyling. The whimsical center console has become less sophisticated. Fortunately, the original round indicators and the distinctive four-spoke steering wheel remain intact.

Under the auspices of Chrysler-Daimler, the PT Cruiser was produced until 2007. The next two years, after a high-profile divorce from the German concern Daimler, Chrysler was going to the Chrysler Holding LLC group. Officially, the production of the PT Cruiser was completed in 2009, but in the same year, its assembly resumed under the auspices of the Chrysler Group LLC. The last Chrysler PT Cruiser rolled off the assembly line in July 2010.

Engines

Petrol:

R4 16V 1.6 (116 HP)

R4 16V 2.0 (141 HP)

R4 16V 2.4 (143 - 152 HP)

R4 16V 2.4T (218 - 233 HP)

Diesel:

R4 2.2 CRD (121 - 150 hp)

The 2-liter unit is better combined with a manual transmission. With an automatic, it loses a lot of power and uses a lot of fuel. With automatic transmission, the 2.4-liter engine gets along best.

For connoisseurs of speed, a variant with a 2.4-liter engine and a turbocharger is provided. It is borrowed from the Neon SRT-4. However, you will have to pay for high power with frequent visits to gas stations.

Units 2.0 and 2.4 are quite reliable. However, sometimes they are prone to overheating, especially when driving in a traffic jam. Usually the cooling fan is to blame. It has two speeds, and overheating occurs when the winding responsible for higher fan speeds fails.

The base 1.6-liter engine will also not cause serious problems, but it is too weak for this car, which will not please you with fuel consumption either. By the way, the engine has an Anglo-Bavarian ancestry (borrowed from the first generation Mini). The unit was produced in Brazil at a plant created as a result of the merger of Chrysler Corporation and the Rover Group (then it was part of the BMW portfolio). The motor is known as Tritec and Pentagon.

The most important advantage of 1.6 is the chain-type timing drive. The only thing that can fail in it is the ignition coils. But the replacement will not require large waste.

Relatively reliable and 150-horsepower turbodiesel 2.2 CRD (OM644). It went to PT Cruiser from Mercedes Vito. Power, elasticity and efficiency are its main advantages. However, it is not without flaws.

One of the most common is a broken pipe connecting the intercooler to the intake manifold. In addition, at high mileage, one can expect failure of the dual-mass flywheel, turbine and injectors. There are problems with the flaps in the intake manifold. It will cost a lot to fix such problems.

In addition, the thermostat may fail. It usually hangs in the open position, which is why the engine does not want to warm up.

In our market, a diesel PT Cruiser is a rarity.

Design features

The Chrysler PT Cruiser is built on the Neon platform and shares some of its solutions with it. The suspension has a not too complicated design. Classic MacPherson struts work at the front. A rigid beam with two levers and two jet rods works behind, reminiscent of Watt's scheme, the same one used in the Opel Astra IV. Suspension settings are typically American. Therefore, Retro feels good only on a straight line. But the chassis has one drawback - too large a turning radius.

The American compact van is only front-wheel drive. The engine was paired with a 5-speed manual (Getrag G288 with diesel and Chrysler MT350 with gasoline engines) or a 4-band 41TE automatic.

Diesel versions differ in the location of the battery. It is not in the engine compartment, but under the passenger seat. For safety, the battery must be gel. Such a battery is more expensive than conventional batteries with electrolyte.

During the production of Retro Chrysler received many limited editions with a special designation - for example, Route 66, Limited, Dream Cruiser, Pacific Coast, Highway Edition. There were about 15 of them in total. All of them differ in color scheme, equipment details and are now in great demand among fans of the brand.

Unfortunately, in crash tests according to EuroNCAP, the car earned only three stars.

The relatively large trunk had a volume of 538 liters.

Typical malfunctions

The most common PT Cruiser problem is hydraulic clutch failure. The repair cost will be about $250. In addition, sometimes the power steering pump fails.

Another weak point of the Chrysler is the suspension, which does not withstand the test of Russian roads well. Most often, you have to change the stabilizer struts and silent blocks of the front levers - after 30-50 thousand km. Wheel bearings and tie rods also do not differ in durability. At high mileage, the Watt rod connector of the rear suspension begins to knock, announcing its wear.

In the front lower arms, bushings and ball joints are replaced. Spare parts and consumables are always available, and prices are quite affordable. For a comprehensive chassis repair, you will need about $ 150-200 (without the cost of shock absorbers).

Before buying, you should carefully inspect the body. In older cars, the edges of the front and rear wings can show signs of corrosion. In addition, the paintwork is very thin, and rust quickly appears in places of damage. And yet, most copies on the secondary market are in good condition. Some samples show problems with window and door seals. So under the front mats you can find water that got there from under the windshield seal.

Owners of the PT Cruiser often note malfunctions of the combined steering column switch, which is responsible for controlling the operating modes of lighting equipment. The reason is a short circuit of the block. One of the common signs of failure is headlights that won't turn off. The only way out is to replace the block. The cost to purchase a new switch and replace it will be between $100 and $200. However, due to a clear design flaw, the defect may recur.

Another annoying nuisance is the dashboard lights that quickly burn out. Replacement is a hassle.

Power windows can also fail. Usually a faulty button module is to blame. The defect did not affect samples that have electric drive only for the front windows.

Conclusion

And yet, the Chrysler PT Cruiser is a relatively trouble-free car, even though in some instances there are serious malfunctions that are quite expensive to fix. Fortunately, the rest of the failures are minor and do not require a lot of money to repair. The strongest side of this car is extravagant appearance, low cost and good capacity.

“Everything new is well-forgotten old,” as the well-known proverb says. In the world of cars, the old is generally not welcomed, but 27-year-old designer Brian Nesbitt really wanted to create an image of a car that would be modern, but with all its appearance reminiscent of the chrome frenzy of exteriors of the thirties.

Finding the right image was not easy. The first prototype - Plymouth Pronto - was shown in 1997. Inflated forms, the style of a typical "American" of the first half of the century, combined with the hatchback body that was loved by that time, not only "blew up" the public, but was warmly received. The direction was determined quite accurately, the work continued.

Chrysler Pronto Concept

The next prototype is considered the immediate predecessor of the Cruiser - Pronto Cruiser. Its presentation took place in March 1998. However, there were still two whole years left before the serial production, and this period turned out to be quite enough for it to be decided to abolish the Plymouth brand by the time the PT Cruiser was released. Therefore, the PT Cruiser, which appeared on sale in 2000, came out under the Chrysler brand, and not Plymouth. The Dodge Neon was taken as the basis for the prototypes, and its presence is also felt in the PT Cruiser. Production of the Pitikruzer was completed in 2010. During this time, a huge number of Chrysler modifications have been released with various powertrains and gearboxes. Car assembly was established in Mexico and Austria. The car was quite popular, and already in 2006 the millionth PT Cruiser rolled off the assembly line in Mexico.

In December 2005, the car was restyled; modified Chryslers went on sale in 2006. The main differences are limited to the exterior and interior, there were no major structural changes.

Our car is from Mexico. It was brought to Russia in 2008 and has all the features of a typical "American": a speedometer and an odometer in miles, a rather old structurally gasoline engine with a volume of 2.4 liters (150 hp), a three-speed automatic transmission A413 (which can be called a rarity , the main share of these machines has a four-speed "automatic" or a five-speed "mechanics"). To date, the mileage of our copy is about 120 thousand kilometers. Well, let's see what you can touch in Chrysler with your own hands.

Engine

There is no need to expect any serious breakdowns from the EDZ motor - it is without a turbine, quite simple and reliable. If not for one "but": the layout of the engine compartment completely discourages the desire to do something yourself. As the specialist inspecting the engine said, this car is a godsend for a service station employee. Even fairly simple operations often look like an exciting quest, and not the cheapest.

The only thing you can do on your own is to replace the air filter. It is easy to get to it, and the case cover is only on two latches. Change - I don’t want to, at least every day. Unfortunately, this operation costs only 100-200 rubles in the service, so you won’t be able to get rich on it, especially since the price of the air filter is 500 rubles.

If the desire to disassemble half a car to perform the work provided for by the maintenance regulations is indomitable, then you will have to buy a set of asterisk keys - without them you will be helpless, like hares before being saved by their grandfather Mazay. In addition, you will need inch-sized wrenches. And audacity. Huge stock of audacity. Let's try, for example, remove the battery for recharging. Particularly greedy Chrysler owners are trying to stick a battery with normal polarity instead of reverse polarity into the car. It is very difficult, but possible. They may be good lovers, but auto mechanics are so-so. If you got a copy where the terminals went under the wing, get ready to suffer with the key: it is very difficult to reset the terminal.

But, however, this is not the most important thing. Even with a “normal” battery, you will have to dance with a tambourine. First, you need to remove the air filter, and not only the cover, but completely. To do this, disconnect the pipes going to it and simply pull it up. Maybe not right away, but it will work out. Then we find the bolt behind the battery - it must be unscrewed. Then slowly pull out the battery itself, trying not to break the camshaft position sensor. If accuracy is not enough, then prepare at least two and a half thousand for a new sensor. In general, you have already understood that this is not the kind of car whose battery can be carried home every night in cold weather.

An unexpected gift from the designers is the possibility of self-changing engine oil. True, you can’t do without a lift: the filter is at the bottom, behind the crankcase. By the way, this arrangement clearly hints at the need to install protection. The drain plug is located next to the filter, you don’t have to look for it. In a word, standard procedure without quirks. Inspecting the engine, we found traces of oil leaks from under the valve cover. On many cars, it takes about twenty minutes to change the gasket, but the Chrysler is not so simple. The Americans blocked access to the valve cover with an exhaust manifold, which is not a joyful task to remove. In the service, the replacement of the gasket was estimated at 3,000 rubles, along with the part.

1 / 2

2 / 2

Exactly the same amount was estimated to replace the candles. Expensive, because the same collector interferes. If the spirit of adventurism is very strong, then you need to stock up on a collector gasket in advance: you should not re-install the old one. Of course, it will be much easier and cheaper to combine those works that require the removal of the collector. What can be done with service belts? At best, tighten the alternator belt. It was not possible to photograph it, therefore, it is not necessary to speak about the fact that it is even difficult to get to the tension mechanism. To replace the belts, it is better to go to a service, preferably a specialized one, because everyone can promise, but not everyone can do it. How much money to prepare? We consider. The alternator belt costs 500 rubles, its replacement - 300-400. The power steering belt will cost the same 500 rubles, the replacement cost remains the same. I repeat, in multi-brand services, work can cost much more. During the inspection of the car revealed a leak in the cooling radiator. The fact is unpleasant, because it was changed no more than two years ago. The cost of a non-original radiator is about 5,000 rubles, its replacement is about 2,000.

Transmission

Chrysler developers tried to convince gullible citizens that it is not necessary to change the automatic transmission fluid: it is supposedly filled for the entire service life. When choosing a car, pay attention to this detail: there are many gullible people, but they have few good “automatic machines”. The fluid must be changed in the same way as on any other "machine", at least once every 60 thousand. By the way, there is no drain hole in the box (it is for the entire service life!), Therefore, to replace it, you need to unscrew the oil pan. It contains a filter that needs to be replaced. It costs 500 rubles, the replacement is estimated at 800, but the choice of "slurry" is a matter of taste. During the inspection on the lift, they saw an oil leak through the automatic transmission oil seal. This happens, you do not need to be afraid of this, but it is imperative to monitor the oil level. There is a probe for this, which still adds a plus sign to the Cruiser's karma. They are reluctant to take on the repair of Chrysler's "automatic machine", because its design is archaic and strong, but there are few such boxes in Russia. If something makes noise, kicks, whistles, the masters advise to drive to the last, then replace the entire automatic transmission. In the event of a serious breakdown, the “machine”, as a rule, goes into emergency mode, which allows you to get to the service. There are very few cases when the car finally lost the ability to move. The price of a contracted or restored automatic transmission ranges from 30-40 thousand rubles.

For our part, we will allow ourselves a remark: it is not necessary to “stagger” the equipment to the last, if you still find suitable servicemen who will undertake a high-quality bulkhead of an outlandish box. If only because any contract unit may require replacement very soon - without removing and disassembling you will never know what condition the automatic transmission is in.

Chassis and brakes

The chassis here is almost completely from the Dodge Neon. But the Dodge weighed at least 200 kilograms lighter than the Pitikruzer, so anything can become an expendable part of the suspension. Let's start with the front. Perhaps the weakest point is the tie rod ends. A set of rods with tips will cost 4,000 rubles (1,100 - thrust, 900 - tip), replacement - 1,800 rubles. Then - the front stabilizer struts: their cost is about a thousand rubles, the replacement is estimated at 600. The rear silent blocks of the front levers are already asking for rest, their cost is 1,500 rubles, the replacement will cost 1,500 per side in a multi-brand service. Ball joints (although they have grease fittings for injection) are also not very tenacious. They cost 2200 rubles. The front shock absorbers will also have to be changed periodically, an analogue of KYB costs 7,000 rubles. And, of course, wheel bearings - the cost of one is about 1,800 rubles, replacement - from a thousand. Separately, it seems, it’s inexpensive, but God forbid you take a “used” car!

Now let's see what needs to be changed in the back. The rear suspension uses a Watt mechanism. The weak point is the two-arm lever, everything else is basically reliable: there is a beam, and there is nothing to break apart from the Watt mechanism.

The cost of replacing the front and rear brake pads is completely standard, and you can change them yourself, especially the front ones - these brakes are disc. It remains only to buy pads - about 1,200 rubles. Replacement costs from 500 rubles, although here, of course, prices may differ. Replacing the pads in the rear drum brakes is a little more expensive, from 700 rubles. But then again, depending on where you do it.

Body and interior

A thankless job to describe the exterior. He either likes it or he doesn't. The design is undeniably noticeable and eye-catching. The metal and paintwork of the PT Cruiser is very good - if severe rust is noticeable, then the car has most likely been in an accident.

What are we doing outside the car? We change the bulbs in the headlights and taillights. With the headlights, the situation is as follows: in the locker there is a special hatch on the latches. If you carefully remove it, then you can get to the light bulb without much difficulty. Behind it is still easier (if you know): with an asterisk we unscrew a single screw and pull out the entire lantern. The system is simple, but over time it generates backlash in the back of the lamp, which is not very good.
